How successful are some blogs and what makes them successful?

I am trying to get an idea of the type of audiences successful blogs are addressing, how fast they reached that point, and what has been the trigger point. I guess, the metric I would use would be the number of unique visitors per day or month

How successful are some blogs and what makes them successful?
Go to Technorati which has a list of the top 100 blogs http://www.technorati.com/pop/blogs/ -- then study the content of each blog and what makes them stand out from the others

What makes a successful blog?

- A strong, defined personality with wit and even a sense of humor

- An ability to filter news quickly if it is a news blog

- Ability to recognize what is interesting to other people as well as interesting to themselves, and finding the balance between those things.

As to how successful blogs can be? Aside from getting huge traffic, they are also able to monetize their blogs and make money from them. A lot of money.

Boing Boing, PaidContent.org and Fark.com earned a million dollars in ad revenues last year. TechCrunch, a one-person blog ranked by Technorati as one of the top blogs, earns $60,000 a month in ad revenues.
