What's the point of having Blogs while we already have millions of forums on the Internet?

I wouldn't call myself a "computer guru" but I spend at least 6 hours every day on the Internet.

And that makes saying "I don't even know what a blog is" more of a shame :)

All I know about blogs is that they are bulletin boards where threads are posted in reverse chronological order. But my question is, what makes blogs a better means of communication as compared to forums?

Any frank question is greatly appreciated.

What's the point of having Blogs while we already have millions of forums on the Internet?
my personal opinion about them is that there just little "bitching boxes" to run amuck in. frankly i dont care for them and you would have to be a "lame duck" to just sit around reading them every day, ive got better things to do than to read some kids blog thats a low life loser in society but thats my opinion
Reply:In most cases a blog is run by a single person or group. The general format thus becomes "host posts, readers respond." A forum, on the other hand, is designed without a specific leader--there are administrators, but they don't necessarily decide conversation topics, rules of discourse, etc.

Thus, a blog tends to have something of the cult of personality associated with it (I read this blog because I like this writer), whereas a forum tends to attract people based on a more diffuse "atmosphere," the personalities of a number of participants (still sometimes small, but generally larger than the numberof personalities "running" a blog).
Reply:A blog is something personal. You may post whatever that comes into your mind from small things like "How did i brush my teeth this morning" to things like "My neighbour Adam is a bright kid".

These kind of little things, if you post it in a forum, may irritate people and you will get tonnes of flaming from people who think that your thread is completely worthless to them.
Reply:Discussion forums are focused on a large group of people whereas blogs are about an individual. Their thoughts. Their topics. Their rules. I think blogs are more of an outlet to the individual. In opposition discussion forums are interactive and you have to follow the rules of that site and often subject yourself to rude or hurtful comments in addition to other abrasive behavior.

Bloggers are in total control of their domain.
